Benefits & Debt Advice
We appreciate that at different times, tenants can have problems which affect their ability to pay their rent. However, if you do get into difficulties with your rent it is vital that you contact your Housing Officer immediately so that we can work together and address the problem. We will always try to come to a suitable and affordable repayment arrangement which allows you to pay off your rent arrears in instalments rather than in a lump sum and we can also give you advice on whether you may qualify for any benefits. If you have been in receipt of benefits and this has stopped or reduced we can assist you in trying to resolve this matter by working with you referring you to our Money Advice Team, more information on what our Advice Team can help with can be found Benefit & Debt Advice.
All discussions with you are confidential. If you allow your arrears to accrue to an unacceptable level then your case will be referred to the Operations Sub Committee for approval for further action to be taken, however the names and addresses of the tenants concerned are not revealed.
It is important that you keep any arrangement that you make with us and that you ensure that your rent payment is made each period.
IF YOU DO NOT AND YOUR ARREARS CONTINUE TO INCREASE THEN WE WILL TAKE LEGAL ACTION AGAINST YOU FOR RECOVERY OF THIS DEBT AND CAN ULTIMATELY REPOSSESS YOUR HOME.
